The
Emerson Listening Library
Emerson's Listening
Library is a lending library of audio books available for
grades one through five. Our program is unique
in the Berkeley Unified School District and is characteristic
of Emersons innovative approach to making literature
and learning exciting for its students. The students
weekly visits to the Listening Library generate much excitement
and enthusiasm as students choose from among the
collection of 500 audiobooks. The Listening Librarian
is on hand to guide students to fun and challenging stories
they will enjoy and that are appropriate for their reading
level.
The Listening Library
program builds upon the students interests and abilities
in reading and listening, and helps develop the critical literacy
skills, which correlate with higher academic achievement.
Audio books strengthen comprehension, improve and encourage
active listening skills, build vocabulary, increase fluency,
and stimulate independent reading. They allow students to
access academically challenging materials normally above their
grade level.
Our new and emerging readers in first grade
delight in choosing and listening to recordings of appealing
fiction and non-fiction stories. Independently, the students
listen to the story on tape and follow along with the corresponding
book. For our second through fifth grade readers, audio books
provide an excellent tool to motivate both reluctant and accelerated
readers, and ultimately create a lifelong appreciation for
reading..
