Our Approach
Our integrated and cumulative curriculum builds knowledge across the grade levels, engaging students in the study of a wide range of subjects, from geography to government and art to agriculture, through specific thematic units. This approach creates opportunities for each child to develop his or her unique potential.

Our excellent academics are at the heart of our school. We offer a core program of reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies for every grade.

Our rich non-academic programs are also a source of pride at Emerson. We provide art, music, physical education, cooking, and gardening classes. Students in all grade levels go on field trips throughout the year, culminating in a science-based overnight field trip for our fourth and fifth graders. Our fifth graders learn to contribute to the community by engaging in school service projects such as tutoring in lower grade classrooms and helping in the office, cafeteria, and schoolyard throughout the year.
Community and self respect are built daily at Emerson, and reinforced at monthly all-school meetings, where children are recognized for positive citizenship traits and celebrated for their talents and accomplishments through song, poetry, spoken word, and skits.

Emerson is a professional learning community where teachers collaborate and plan effective instruction. To round this out, Emerson has many systems in place to support and enrich our students.
- Our outstanding intervention, tutoring and after-school programs provide additional enrichment and support to more than half the student population at Emerson.
- Our math tutor provides challenge activities to students both during and after school as well as extra support to students who need it.
- Our intervention teachers and BUILD tutors work with students individually and in small groups to provide extra instruction in reading, writing, and math.
- Our on-site after school program, Kids’ World, provides homework support as well as a broad range of classes and activities to keep student engaged in the afternoons.
With this level of expertise and support, students do not fall through the cracks at Emerson School.
