Message from the Principal

Dear Families,

As we prepare to close out the year, a few bookkeeping items. Report cards, in most cases, will go home on the last day of school in a large manila envelope in your child's backpack. (Third grade teacher, Ms. Davis, will be out the last day of school so her report cards will go home a day or two earlier, when she is there to pass them out.) Be sure to read the report card and enjoy all the progress your child has made this year.

In grades K-4, along with the report cards, you will find two "assignments" to keep your child sharp and ready over the summer. First will be a summer reading log from Ms. Jeannie. This year, rather than tracking minutes read, she'd like them to read a target number of just right books per grade level and just list the titles read. Remember, daily reading keeps your child blossoming in numerous ways. Please keep that growth going over the summer!

The second assignment you will find is a grade level math packet that includes important practice in focus areas for the grade level. Don't forget, students currently in 3rd and 4th may also continue to practice their basic facts with Reflex Math as well. (5th graders will also continue to have access until the end of summer). As is our practice, students who complete these summer assignments will receive a treat from me in the fall.

We are also doing inventory on our library at this time. Ms. Zoe works really hard to keep lots of interesting and exciting books in stock and also to recover any books that are missing. If your child has misplaced or lost a library book, you should have been notified by this time. Please be sure to send in the money to cover the cost of the book right away. Ms. Zoe is also willing to take a comparable book in good condition in lieu of money. This is a very important responsibility and report cards may be held back until library fines are resolved. Thank you for keeping our library full!

Thanks,
Susan Hodge

Recycle Unusable Color Markers—Keep Plastic Out of Landfills

Help keep plastic out of the landfill! Please help us collect and repurpose these unusable markers that you’d normally throw away (any brand) by dropping them in the ColorCycle box in the hallway outside the cafetorium.

Crayola pays shipping to send the markers to a facility where the markers get converted into clean fuel! With the help of schools like ours across the country, the ColorCycle program will keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

Summer Soak for the Garden

Families, please help keep our beautiful Emerson Edible Garden thriving and help us grow a giant pumpkin for fall by signing up to water the plants one Saturday in July/August.

While most of the garden is watered automatically, we need folks to come by weekly to make sure the system is working and deep-soak selected plants that need more H2O and TLC.

What fun to come and splash some water on some appreciative flora! Signing up for just one soak is fine.  Sign up at tinyurl.com/EmersonWater17
