A SPECIAL WELCOME NOTE FROM PRINCIPAL HOLMES

Dear Families,

It is my pleasure to welcome and invite you to Emerson Elementary School on Monday, August 26th.  I hope you have enjoyed a fun and safe summer and are eager to begin a new school year.  I am honored to be the new Principal, and look forward to getting to know the children and families of this outstanding community.  Emerson’s reputation is one of inclusion, equity and celebrating the joy of education.  As the new Principal, I am proud to join this community, and eager to assist and team with you to support your student’s growth and success.

So that you may begin planning, take note of the following dates:

  • Friday, August 23, 4:00PM - Class Lists Posted at the front of the school (kindergartners will be assigned to color groups)

  • Monday, August 26, 8:10AM - First Day of School Kindergarten dismissed at 1:30PM, Grades 1-5 dismissed at 2:20PM

  • Wednesday, August 28 - Early Release All students dismissed at 1:30PM

  • Thursday August 29, 5:00PM - K Class Lists Posted at the front of the school

  • Monday, September 2 - Labor Day No School

  • Thursday, September 5, 6:00PM - Back to School Night Meet the teachers/staff

If your child is attending our after-school program, Kids’ World, rest assured, it will be up and running on the first day of school. Your child’s teacher will transition him/her from class to Kids’ World.

If you are brand new to Emerson with an incoming Kindergartner, please know that during the first week of school, students are assigned according to color groups.  Rather than make immediate permanent teacher placements for our newest students, staff welcomes the students, engages them in activities, and gets to know them.  Each teacher will spend time in rotation with each color group. At the end of the week, teachers and the administration will use the knowledge gained from the color groupings to create balanced class rosters, with permanent classroom teachers.  These class lists will be posted by 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 29th.

In order to make our transition a smooth one, please help your kindergartner understand that the teacher assigned on the first day of school may not be his/her permanent teacher. Kindergarten teachers will be on the yard at 8:00 am to welcome students assigned to their color group. In addition, if you are picking up your child after school, make a plan to meet him or her at our Kindergarten 1:30 pm dismissal on the play yard, rather than at the doors of the classroom.

One of my goals is to keep you informed throughout the school year.  To that end, I am fortunate to partner with a dynamic PTA.  Please regularly check the school website - emerson.berkeleypta.org - and read the weekly BearFacts newsletter and e-mail alerts to learn more about Emerson happenings.  You can subscribe to the newsletter by sending an email to emersonschoolnews@gmail.com.

Prior to the first day of school, please complete the lunch application at www.ezmealapp.com.  We encourage all families to apply for free/reduced lunch, even if you will not be using it, so that we may continue to receive additional federal and state funding to our school, which helps provide additional resources to help students. The application needs to be completed each year, and must be approved by Food Services before your child can qualify for the program.  A full price lunch, which includes daily salad bar and milk, costs $4.00.  You may load money on your child’s account and pay for lunch at www.ezschoolpay.com.

The PTA will offer coffee and pastries in the library on the first day of school after the first bell.  You are welcome to join us as we greet new families and reconnect with friends.

Please check your child’s daily folder for more information. I look forward to a wonderful year partnering with you for your child’s success.

Sincerely,

Jana Holmes, Principal

Day of Action: Supporting greater funding for public education in Sacramento

Click through for more information from Ms. Hodge.
At Emerson, we are expecting to have the vast majority of our teaching staff and aides absent on this day because they are planning to attend the full day of the rally in Sacramento. Emerson will have a few teachers, substitutes, & staff on site to supervise all the students.

We have cancelled testing for that day and we will not be able to provide instruction. We anticipate that many students will stay home or will join their families in the call to action in Sacramento. Students who do attend school will be supervised in large groups in common areas, such as the cafeteria, the yard, and the library. If possible, we plan to keep K students in their classrooms.

If you can, please let us know if you plan to send your child to school on 5/22:  Day of Action Google Form
