MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Emerson Families,

This rain just keeps coming and coming!  That means we have lots of flowers to look forward to.  Here at Emerson we are doing our best to stay dry and safe.  We are grateful for the overhead fans that were installed into each classroom earlier this fall.  These fans keep our circulation moving when we need to close windows due to extreme wind or cold.  We also continue to utilize our air purifiers.  The stairwell that was damaged due to the car accident has also been partly restored.  The area has been cleaned up and the interior doors have been made accessible.  This means that students and staff may safely use the stairwell to access the blacktop in case of need or emergency.  We keep these doors propped open during the day, which also increases our indoor air quality and ventilation.  We still anticipate the complete repair, in which we reestablish access to Garber Street, this summer.

The Read-a-Thon has kicked off!  We hope that your child is participating and logging their minutes. This is a contest and a fundraiser that comes with individual and school wide prizes.  Our school wide goal is to read 300,000 minutes.  You can count the minutes that you spend reading to your child, and the minutes they read on their own.  The last day of the Read-a-Thon is Sunday, March 19.  The contest winners will be announced at the April All School Meeting.  Shout out to Ms. Jeannie, literacy coach, Ms. Rachel, librarian, Ms. Kanat and Ms. Paine, parent volunteers, for coordinating our school-wide event.  If you would like more information, watch this fun video (preferably with your student) created by Elephant and Piggie. Let’s have fun reading this Spring!

Every student participated in the California Math Council’s School wide Math Festival today.  We are thankful for the PTA sponsorship of this opportunity, which brings a fun, self exploratory festival that exposes students to key math concepts that are linked to Common Core and age appropriate standards.  Big Smile to the Grade Level/Room Parents who volunteered today to make this event a success!   We encourage you to ask your students about some of the challenges and activities they explored during today’s Math Festival.

Thank you for your support,

Jana Holmes

Read-a-Thon UPDATE

Emerson students, you rock! You’re challenging yourselves and discovering new types of books to read. Keep up the great work - you have a few more days left to read, read, read. The Read-a-Thon ends at the end of the day on March 19th. Don’t forget to use the Reading Log to record your minutes and, adults, don’t forget to initial each day. Your classroom teacher will let you know how to turn in your reading log. Please make sure it’s turned in by March 24th to be eligible for the prizes. Questions: contact Ms. Jeannie at  jeanniewang@berkeley.net or Ashleigh Kanat at ashleigh.kanat@gmail.com.

Behind the bearfacts

Behind the Bearfacts is a group of parent volunteers serving as editors producing our school newsletter each week to keep the Emerson community informed and connected. This dedicated rotating crew of editors includes Ashleigh Kanat, Nathan Fisher, Robert Lewis, Jennifer Petrucelli, Carol Wang, and Amy Fire. Special thanks to our regular contributors: Principal Holmes, Rana Cho with PTA news, Ms. Ames in the Art Corner, Cielo Rios in the Equity Corner, and Ms. Rachel for sharing our Student Shout Outs and Library News. Are you interested in working on the BearFacts next year? Email communications@emersonelementary.org. We are looking for a new crew to fill the shoes of our graduating parent editors. Thank you Bearfacts Team for your critical support these last 8 months and for several of you for many Emerson years!
