ART CORNER WITH MS. AMES

5th Graders completed this work earlier this year. They each wrote a brief phrase about themselves and then carefully wrote the letters in a grid. We looked at the work of Paul Klee for inspiration - he often used a grid in his compositions and he even wrote out a very long poem in this way. Artists made sure that their letters touched the top and bottom of the squares so that they would create interesting negative shapes around the letters. They can be hard to read, but that's part of the fun of this style of art.

Fall Festival

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Fall Festival this past Saturday such a great time, and to everyone who attended and enjoyed the festivities! Special thanks to our PTA organizers Ariel Clute, VP of Community Building, and Elise Kneram, VP of Community Building, and our many volunteers.

OFRENDA IN THE LIBRARY!

Some lovely volunteers and their children (Cielo and Adriana, and their kids Severine, Salvador and Eleonor) put up the ofrenda in the library in honor of Dia de los Muertos! This is a yearly tradition at Emerson, and all students, staff and families are welcome to add a photo, item or letter representing a loved one (human or animal) whose life will be remembered and celebrated on November 1st and 2nd.

EQUITY CORNER

CELEBRATING THE DIVERSITY OF OUR COMMUNITY

In October, Emerson honors the rich diversity of our communities, celebrating Latine/x Heritage Month (Sept 15 - Oct 15), LGBTQ+ History Month (Oct), and Filipino American History Month (Oct). BUSD's Ethnic Studies Teacher Joemy Ito-Gates has compiled these excellent resources for teachers and caregivers!

LGBTQ+ History Month

Origins

The recognition of LGBTQ History Month was born out of an idea from a Missouri high school teacher, Rodney Wilson, who, in 1994, believed a month should be dedicated to the celebration and teaching of gay and lesbian history, and gathered other teachers and community leaders. They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur in the month of October. In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the U.S. designated October as LGBT History Month. We recognize leaders and freedom fighters of the LGBTQ+ community, including Marsha P. Johnson, Urvashi Vaid, Edith Windsor, Audre Lorde, Harvey Milk, among many others.

BUSD celebrates the LGBTQ+ community

BUSD celebrates, affirms, and highlights the deep history and significant achievements of the LGBTQ+ community in our schools and our community. BUSD has created a webpage of resources, of note are highlights from wonderful BUSD staff, including our own Emerson staff. This section is called “Lifting Up LGBTQ+ Voices,”
